Sexually Transmitted Infections

Sexually transmitted infections are among the most common medical issues in the US. However, they often carry a social stigma disproportionate to their medical severity. In the pages that follow, we will discuss the major sexually transmitted infections seen in the US from three major perspectives: diagnosis, symptoms, and treatment. In addition, we will link each infection to the appropriate CDC (Centers for Disease Control) information page for more detail. Westover Heights Clinic diagnoses and treats all of these infections, with the exception of HIV, which is most often diagnosed at our clinic and treated in the offices of HIV specialists. Hepatitis infections are diagnosed here, but most often treated at the office of gastroenterologists (GI clinicians).

Why do we use the term sexually transmitted infection and not sexually transmitted disease? Good question, and a common one. Disease, by definition, has symptoms. But many sexually transmitted “problems” do not present with symptoms, and, are therefore better described as infections, not diseases. This is a fine point, perhaps, but one worth thinking about and understanding for greatest accuracy.

Sexually transmitted infections are not new; they have been around forever. We are able to diagnose them better now, and treat them with much more simple methods (and less discomfort!). Those that are not curable are manageable. Our job is to provide the highest level, most cutting edge care for these infections so your life can be as normal as possible, as quickly as possible.
